Pump authorization limits help protect customers and merchants
With fuel prices fluctuating, customers may have questions about why a pump shuts off once a pay-at-the-pump transaction reaches a certain dollar amount.
Pump authorization limits are a security measure designed to help protect both consumers and merchants. These limits prevent a customer from fueling over a preset amount within a single pay-at-the-pump transaction, and CHS-set limits are based on card brand guidelines.
Below is helpful information to know about pump authorization limits:
- Fleet cards typically have higher limits. If a customer is using a consumer credit card to fuel a large truck, they may reduce frustration by using a fleet card instead. For Cenex® branded locations, this can also be a good opportunity to promote the Cenex Voyager® Fleet Card program.
- Limits apply to a single transaction. Customers may swipe their card again to continue fueling; however, some cards may also have daily transaction limits.
- Prepaying inside is another option. Customers can prepay inside to avoid being impacted by pay-at-the-pump authorization limits.
