Big Changes Coming to CHS Network

In the coming months, big changes are coming to the CHS network that will improve point of sale (POS) software release timelines and aid in keeping locations secure. CHS is reducing the number of Electronic Payment Servers (EPS) on our network and has selected Verifone as our EPS for use with Verifone, Pinnacle and Triple E systems.

What is an EPS?
An Electronic Payment Servers (EPS) is one of the major components that make it possible for you to process credit card transactions.

  • The EPS interacts with the POS and PIN Pad to securely encrypt payment information to the payment processor
  • The payment processor processes transactions to card issuers for payment confirmation and sends back an encrypted confirmation/rejection to the EPS
  • The EPS then communicates back to the PIN Pad the status of the transaction

The Verifone EPS will significantly reduce the number of certifications required, allowing us to test and release software updates in a timelier fashion.

Why is certification important?
Because the EPS is responsible for securely managing transaction amounts and sensitive data, such as personal transaction information, each EPS needs to be PCI certified.  It is important to note that each time POS vendors update software, recertification may be required and could take up to 3-6 months and incur additional costs.

Why the recent change?
Reducing the number of PCI certifications required will allow us to test and release software updates in a more efficient manner.  This is especially important with the upcoming Outdoor EMV liability shift in April 2021.  This change will also help mitigate the impact of recent and upcoming hardware end of life dates for multiple costly devices, including the Ingenico ISC 250 PIN Pads and Allied NexGen forecourt controller.

How will this impact you?
CHS is currently working with Pinnacle Palm and Triple E Systems to be the first POS systems integrated with the Verifone EPS. In the coming months, Pinnacle Palm and Triple E POS merchants will receive communications about next steps and what to expect moving forward.
