Visa EMV Pump Authorization Limits

Pump authorization limits allow electronic transactions to be verified before they are cleared. These limits are implemented as an added security measure for merchants, and prevent a customer from fueling over a preset amount within a single pay-at-pump transaction. With the outdoor EMV liability shift drawing near, Visa has announced a change to pump authorization limits for EMV chip cards versus magstripe cards.

Effective January 27, the Automated Fuel Dispenser (AFD) limits for EMV transactions will be raised. For non-Fleet card EMV Visa transactions, the pump authorization limit will be raised to $125. For Fleet card EMV Visa transactions, the pump authorization limit will be raised to $350. Authorization limits for non-EMV card transactions will remain the same.
