Red Flags for Fraud

Fraud is an ever-present threat for c-stores and other businesses. To protect your business and community, it is crucial that employees are trained to be on the lookout for potentially fraudulent activity.

While fraud tactics are constantly evolving, there are some methods and behaviors that are common and easy to spot.

Red flags to watch for:

  1. Requesting that a card number be entered manually by the clerk
  2. Attempting to manually enter a card number on the PIN pad with no card present
  3. Using a card that fails with both the EMV chip and magnetic strip
  4. Attempting to use multiple cards after a card declines
  5. Purchasing large amounts of the following items:
    • Tobacco products
    • Lottery tickets
    • Gift cards
    • Alcohol
