Pump authorization limits are implemented as an added security measure for merchants and prevent customers from fueling over preset amounts within a single pay-at-pump transaction. The reminders below can be helpful for fielding potential consumer questions and training employees.
- Pump authorization limits are set by the card brands
- Pump authorization limits for consumer cards are set at $100
- Transactions over $100 are considered high risk which means more interchange is charged for lack of compliance
- Beginning in 2020, the interchange penalty will be more severe
- Transactions over $100 can be charged back to the merchant for lack of compliance
- Lost and stolen fraud at the pump is covered by CHS up to $1000
- Counterfeit fraud is covered by the card brands
